Buying a New Water Heater

Residential Water Heater Installation, Service, and Repair

There’s a lot that goes into choosing the right hot water heater for your home. Water heaters vary in size, price, capacity, functionality, and even in their fuel supply. So, it’s important that you take your time and do your homework when deciding what type of water heater you need for your home. Your needs will vary depending on how many people live in your household and what your overall monthly water usage habits are like. If you’re in the market for professional and reliable residential water heater installation in Hamilton and surrounding areas, then you can call on the experts at MDM Mechanical.

Professional Residential Water Heater Installation in Hamilton

Home improvements—especially purchasing and installing a new water heater—can be expensive, which is why many homeowners prefer to save a few dollars by turning this task into a DIY project rather than hiring licensed HVAC technicians to do it for them.

The only problem with this is that far too many homeowners don’t have the experience and knowledge it takes to both select and correctly install a tank or tankless water heater. Many people don’t even know the difference between the two or what their various advantages and disadvantages are. To avoid running into costly problems during and after the installation process, it’s better to hire a team of professional HVAC technicians and contractors to complete the project for you.

At MDM Mechanical, we’re committed to delivering quality installation services, top-of-the-line product recommendations, and ongoing product maintenance to guarantee that your water heater will last for many years to come without having to be replaced.

Different Types of Water Heaters for Your Home

Every home is designed and constructed differently and every homeowner has different water heating needs. Whether you live alone, have a family, or are renting out your home to tenants, your water usage changes based on your living situation and the configuration of the piping in your home. It’s important to take all of that into consideration when choosing one of the following types of water heaters for your home.

Gravity Vent Hot Water Tank (Standard or Atmospheric Vent)

This type of hot water tank is very basic and uses a standing pilot light. It uses gravity to exhaust the flue gases to the outdoors. This type of venting system is typically used in conjunction with a brick chimney or a B Vent stack that a furnace once shared. These water heaters come in 40, 50, 60, and 75 gallon sizes in residential applications. These types of hot water tanks are not energy star-rated and are only used in a retrofit situation as you can no longer install these in a new build for residential construction.

Power Vented or Direct Vented Hot Water Tank

This type of hot water tank is more energy-efficient than a gravity vent water heater and has more flexibility for installation. It allows the use of PVC for the vent pipe, which can be vertically installed anywhere within venting requirements. These hot water tanks are energy star-rated and come in 40, 50, 60, and 75 gallon sizes. These are becoming more popular on retrofit situations.

High-Efficiency Hot Water Tank

These water heaters are up to 98% efficient. They have a high-efficiency condensing heat exchanger, just like a boiler, furnace, or tankless water heater. They can recover as much as a tankless water heater but in a storage tank application. These high-efficiency hot water tanks are the most expensive type and are becoming mandatory on most new energy star-rated residential house builds to meet energy standards. They’re available only in 50 and 75 gallon sizes in residential applications.

Tankless Water Heaters (On-Demand Water Heaters)

These types of water heaters are up to 98% efficient and take up virtually no floor space as they can be mounted on any wall as long as the service clearances are maintained. These tankless water heaters require a larger gas pipe, relocated cold and hot water lines, and venting systems such as PVC system 636. Tankless water heaters are energy star-rated and are becoming quite popular in retrofit and new construction builds. They produce an endless amount of hot water, so if you never want to experience a cold shower again, this type of water heater may be the perfect fit for your home.

Our Installation Process

First, we schedule a complimentary in-home consultation, so that we can assess your existing water heater and the type of hookup line you have. Based on your specific water usage needs, your budget, and your existing gas or electric line, we’ll recommend an appropriate water heating system for your home.

Once we’ve determined the appropriate product for your home, we’ll order the new unit. Then, we’ll return to your home to disconnect and remove your old water heater and install the new one. For your convenience, we’ll dispose of the old unit or repurpose it in an environmentally sustainable way.
